Why you should hire the pros, and why Southwest Greens of Huntsville is leader in the industry for installation practices.

You may be asking yourself, “Can I install artificial grass myself?” Sure, you could try to install artificial grass yourself, but it is not a simple task. The equipment and tools you’d need cost a lot, it takes a while to do it yourself, and you could void your warranty. Let’s see why you really should have your synthetic golf turf installed by a professional who follows artificial turf installation best practices.

WHY PROFESSIONAL ARTIFICIAL GRASS INSTALLATION

Whether or not you are adding a golf green to your home, or you are managing a commercial golf course, having artificial turf professionally installed will save you headaches, time, and money — and, over time, yield a more attractive green.

Saved Time

Even ”easy” DIY projects can often become a big deal. Haven’t we all been there? Multiple trips to the home improvement store for supplies or tools we didn’t realize we need, plans not going according to plan, multiple days of laborious work? When you have your turf installed by a pro, you’ll save so much time, and you’ll enjoy the greens sooner.

In order to properly install artificial golf greens, you’ll need to level the ground, add a base of crushed aggregate, add padding, lay the turf, add infill, and roll the turf to have the best playability and to make it look as real as possible. Cutting edges so you have clean borders is also challenging and needs a lot of experience to get just right. All of this requires some specialized tools and knowledge to do correctly and avoid wonky sections and edges that peel up creating a terrible look.

Difficult Soil/Landscape

An ideal soil is scarce. Most property owners can vouch for this. It’s rare to be able to get your shovel into the soil without issues. Instead, we work with stones, clay, or soil permeated with roots from nearby trees and plants in many locations. Just digging can become grueling work. And, if you’re digging into roots, you could be hurting surrounding plants and trees you might want to keep.

We’ve faced obstacles like huge boulders, old (and new) irrigation lines, and tree stumps on many of our installation projects. Every one of these obstructions have to be repurposed or removed. Excavation can also produce tons of soil you may not need — what is your plan to deal with it? We often have to transport this excess soil offsite.

A pro installer can arrange all of this for you. So if you’re not looking to do very back-breaking manual labor or don’t know how to dispose of your excavated soil, hiring an installation professional for your project is your best bet.

Large Areas

When installing a golf green in a large area, seaming is among the most challenging parts of the turf to do correctly. Seeming is the process of joining two or more pieces together. This is much like carpet installation, when turf seams are blended correctly, they are not noticeable. When seams aren’t done the right way, they will be noticeable and give a disappointing finished product.

Imagine rolling a sheet of paper or a poster. Do you always get the alignment perfect when trying to execute a good roll? Sometimes instead of a clean edge, end up with paper sticking out on one end. This same thing is possible when seaming artificial turf. One small error in the beginning will throw the whole project off and look terrible when finished. A professional installer will have a lot of experience joining seams and they will make sure everything looks great before they are done.

THE SOUTHWEST GREENS WAY

There are three things that differentiate Southwest Greens of Huntsville from the rest in the turf industry — craftsmanship, guarantees, and customer service. We do not believe in one-size-fits-all artificial turf installations, and because of that, we’ve perfected the art and science of Huntsville artificial turf installation. We’ve perfected our process with over 6,000 golf greens across the globe under our belts.

Here’s a quick look at how our artificial putting green installation process works.

  • A base of crushed aggregate, which, unlike concrete, can be moistened and molded to make challenging breaks and undulations.
  • Next, we install at least a cushion pad to help the ball roll and shot absorption, then comes our state-of-the-art polypropylene turf material that’s used to mimic the vibrant green color, softness, and playability of natural grass.
  • Then we in-fill the turf with a formulation of fine-coated silica sand that gives it the touch and feel of traditional grass.
  • Finally, roll the tops to make the effect of true bent grass green. Options include the installation of first and second cuts fringe, sand traps, bunkers, fairways, and roughs.
